Eucalyptus
Eucalypts is the common name applied to plants of the genus Eucalyptus. Over 700 species dominate the Australian landscape varying in size from that of a low shrub to those that are among the tallest trees in the world.
Easily recognisable by their distinctive flowers and fruit (gumnuts), Eucalypts possess a fast growth rate making them a vigorous source of wood. They are widely considered beneficial for their ornamental use, timber, firewood and pulpwood. They are suitable as windbreaks and for reducing erosion. They are a genus that has excellent results in direct seeding projects.
Most Eucalyptus tolerate a wide range of environments and have characteristic bark types such as: stringybark, ironbark, tessellated, box and ribbon. Their leaves too are notable by the oil glands that cover them. On a warm day this oil vapourises and forms a blue haze on the Australian landscape.
Acacia
Also known in Australia as Wattles, Acacias are a genus of shrubs and trees belonging to the sub family, Mimosodeae of the family Fabaceae. Worldwide, it is thought they number approximately 1300 different species of which 960 are found in Australia. Further Australian Acacias are distinctive because unlike the species found overseas, they are generally not thorny.
Acacia are planted for erosion control especially where mining or constructional damaged has occurred.
Acacia species such as Acacia mangium, Acacia crassicarpa, Acacia cincinnata and Acacia melanoxylon are grown worldwide for timber uses. Seedworld Australia has supplied seed for many of these projects and our experience in supplying provenance selected seed is vital in the projects long term results.
